The D. L. Forbes Academy Program offers positive constructive discipline, structure and solutions to some of the issues that our youth are facing in today’s society. Together, we can develop POSITIVE behavior by teaching:
Upon graduating from our summer program, we will continue to maintain a relationship with you and your child. We offer home visits, school visits, weekly meetings for the cadets, monthly weekend drills, field trips, mentoring, staff/parent meetings and many other services. Our staff are dedicated and committed to building long term relationships with you and your child.
Our Mission is to recognize the need to take a holistic approach in addressing the growing problem of crime by our youth. We will do this by providing “youth” with the proper tools and opportunities to learn how to be productive citizens in the community. We will train them in the highest principles of leadership, values, personal integrity, individual responsibility, self-discipline and good citizenship.
Our vision is quite simple. While partnering with local organizations, parents and area churches, we will identify youth that would benefit from the foundation’s programs. Our short term goal is to provide counseling and training for these youth and their families. Our activities will focus on para military training and discipline and will provide youth positive exposure to athletic and recreational activities, career development, community services and educational enrichment. Our long term goal is to build a residential academy for our cadets. This academy will provide educational and faith based training. The minimum commitment for each cadet will be one year with a maximum of three years.
Founded in 2002, the D.L. Forbes Youth Foundation has mentored youth with academic and discipline challenges in Durham, Wilson, Roxboro and other cities throughout North Carolina and surrounding states. An estimate of 280 cadets have completed the Advanced Leadership Academy Program to date, and participated in the one year follow-up Mentoring Program. Approximately 20 cadets have attended college or currently in college and 5 cadets are in the military. The D.L. Forbes Youth Foundation is a dedicated youth mentoring organization that instills in its cadets the highest level of leadership through para-military training. The Foundation has two branches in Durham and Roxboro, North Carolina.
D. L. Forbes Youth Foundation was inspired by the late Elder Demetrius Lotrick Forbes Sr. Shortly before his death, while conversing with his son, Winslow, he shared his vision of getting involved and working with Youth in the community. The Foundation was birthed out of that vision through his son Winslow, committing his life to mentoring youth to be productive citizens in the community.
